Outline of Trip Itinerary

  • 07/21/2019 : Our dear friend Laura will be driving us to the Delta Hotel nr. Metro Airport
  • 07/22/2019: We leave at 7:10 a.m. so will be arriving at airport at 4:30 to take care of any hiccups while checking in. Arrive in Anchorage at 12:26 (local time). Call RV rental company to pick us up. After giving us the skinny on operating the Class C, on to the grocery store to stock up and then Anchorage Ship Creek RV park to spend our first night in our new home.
  • 07/23/2019: Travel to Girdwood, staying at Williwaw campground and our first hike will be on the Winner Creek Trail.
  • 07/24/2019 to 07/25/2019: Travel to Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area. More hiking is planned.
  • 07/26/2019: Travel to Soldotna spending the night at the Klondike C.G..
  • 07/27 to 07/30/2019: Arrive in Homer. Here we are going out on a halibut fishing charter, visiting the Kilchers Museum from the TV program, Alaska: The Last Frontier, and going to A.J.’s Steakhouse to see Hobo Jim, one of our favorite singers.
  • 07/31/2019: back to Soldotna.
  • 08/01/2019 to 08/04/2019: On to Seward. Here we are going on a Natl. Park Tour Cruise, and a guided city tour. Spending the nights at Miller Landing’s RV Park.
  • 08/05/2019: Nothing is planned for this day.
  • 08/06/2019: Driving back to Girdwood and staying at Williwaw campground.
  • 08/07/2019: Driving to Whittier where we will be boarding the Alaska Marine Hwy Ferry. Our time on the boat is six hours. We expect to see whales, seals, eagles, etc. We spend the night at Eagles Rest RV in Valdez.
  • 08/08/2019 to 8/10/2019: Spending time in Valdez. We expect we need to wash clothes and go grocery shopping. We are going on a 8.5 hour cruise on the Prince William Sound where we will see glaciers, wildlife, including Humpback or Orca Whales, porpoise, eagles, puffins, sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and more! (At least that is what the brochure says)
  • 08/10/2019 to 08/19/2019: These nine days we have no reservations anywhere. The road to Tok follows several rivers that Doug expects to compete with the bears for the fish.
  • 08/20/2019 to 08/24/2019: Back to civilization. We arrive in Fairbanks to wash clothes but don’t expect to go grocery shopping because the freezer will be full of fish. We are taking a bus to cross the Arctic Circle, ride the Riverboat Discover and visit the Alaska Pipeline Camp. We are staying at the Fairbanks River Edge Campground
  • Almost home!!
  • 08/25/2019 to 08/28/2019: On to Denali. We have reservations for the bus to go inside the park. Our campground is Denali Savage River.
  • 08/29/2019 to 08/30/2019: Driving to Talkeetna where we will be taking The Alaskan Railroad to Hurricane.
  • 08/31/2019 to 9/01/2019: On to the Alaskan State Fair. On the way we will take a scenic drive along Hatcher’s Pass to get to Palmer. We plan on staying at the State Fair Grounds and spending a day at the fair seeing the HUGE cabbages and listening to Hobo Jim again.
  • 09/02/2019 to 09/03/2019: Driving to Anchorage and spending two nights at Anchorage Ship Creek RV Park. Spending the day doing the tourists things during the day.
  • 09/04/2019 Returning the Class C to the dealer and hanging around Anchorage where our plane leaves at 9:49 p.m. We land in Detroit at 11:03 a.m. (local time) on 09/05/2019.
  • Footnote: We plan to have a super, wonderful dream vacation. But, we expect some problems, so read the blog and learn what they were. We will be posting pictures as well.
