We had a great time in Homer!!
I have to apologize for the stark nature of our web site. The campground wifi is primitive and extremely slow. No picture can be uploaded and even text blogs are very slow to open a page or anything. These verbal posts are the best I can do.
We are currently in the Klondike RV camp in Soldotna having left Homer this morning. Big change in plans today. We were at Anchor Point harbor this morning at 7am to cross the Cook Inlet and view bears on the beach of Lake Clark. They cancelled due to high seas. We were OK with that seeing yesterday we aided in the rescue of a capsized boat. All 5 people were rescued (two on our boat) but it was a close call because people only last minutes in these cold waters. We were OK about not being today’s statistics.
Yesterday we hiked a primitive area on the South side of Ketchimac Bay. We did 4.8 miles of trail which is something we can do. They did not tell us the elevations and steepness and difficulty of the trail. It was tough but we had to do it (no helicopter rescues please!). Today we are stiff and sore.
The day before yesterday we did a halibut fishing charter and we did catch halibut (pictures when I can). We had 27 lbs of halibut fillets. We ate 3 lbs and shipped 24 lbs frozen back home. Great day and great fishing.
The day before that we visited the Kilcher family homestead (from tv program “Alaska, The Last Frontier”). We spent time with Otto one of the family patriaches and Helen got a nice hug. He was great and the homestead was great.
If you are looking for a Red Salmon fisherman do not consider me. I tried my hand but not even close. The fun is the fish do not bite going up stream to spawn. So you cast a bare single hook and hope the line goes thru there mouth and then pull to set the hook in their check. Snagging on any other body part is illegal. It sounds crazy, but those that know how were pulling them in (not me!) What the hell, I have halibut!).
We have a folk artist we really like named “Hobby Jim” And he sings songs about life in Alaska. Well he was performing in Homer and we went to see him at AJs steakhouse. We stayed for two sets and in between (you guessed it, he hugged Helen and we all talked for a long time between his sets and I asked him to add “Reddington’s Run to his second set and he did that for me. Very nice guy and glad we got to meet him and talk with him in person. We will see him again at the end of our trip at “The Alaskan State Fair”.
That is definitely a long enough post. Are you getting the idea we are having a great trip? Well you are right!
Our Camp site at Miller Landing in Seward is on the beach overlooking the Ocean and Mountains. Very Nice views. We have a boat excursion for wildlife and glacier viewing here.

So glad to hear that you’re having a great time! I don’t know if you’ll get this message but I wanted to send it anyway so that you’ll know we’re following your blogs. We’re going camping tomorrow at Holly Rec just for the week. Wish us luck with Lily and Storm, the cat. /Sue
